Office of Academic Affairs
Welcome to the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. In our commitment to excellence we oversee the academic programs of five Divisions that include Humanities, Mathematics and Science, Fine Arts, Education, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. With 21 majors and 22 minors, students have the opportunity to experience a true liberal arts education, but with a difference. Most majors offer practical experience that is directly related to careers in the discipline. For example, Environmental Science not only educates students in the science of the environment, but exposes them to environmental issues through field trips into the Georgia mountains. Similarly, students in Musical Theatre have the opportunity to perfect their craft by showing their singing and acting talents in the Dobbs Theatre or the larger Glenn Auditorium.
Our new Interdisciplinary Studies (Discover Degree) program, which allows students to design a personalized program of study, combines three disciplines for a common purpose. We currently offer seven predesigned combinations that include Biomedical Ethics, Health Administration, Comparative Literature and Culture, and Gender and Society, to name a few. These distinct combinations prepare students for careers in an ever-changing job market and allow students to pursue their unique interests.
Our office also helps to broaden a student’s educational experience through study abroad trips, internships and teacher assistant assignments. All of these enhancements strengthen the student’s credentials. Potential employers can see the student’s academic accomplishments as well as their personal interests and involvement in other worthwhile activities.
We are proud that our academic focus is on the student’s successful completion of a degree, as well as a successful plan for the future. Discussions about career plans begin in the freshman year and are accompanied by workshops throughout a student’s four years. Recent graduates have been accepted into graduate programs at the University of Georgia, Emory University, Vanderbilt University and others. Graduates have also pursued professional interests in law and medicine.
YHC makes college the experience of a lifetime, and, with the help of our outstanding faculty, the perfect place for students to discover their full potential.
